E.B. Mallet, Jr.

The most colorful and important 19th century industrialist and philanthropist in Freeport was E.B. Mallet, Jr. He invested his large inheritance, building shoe factories, a saw mill and brickyard, a grist mill and general store, and clean, safe housing for his employees.

Casco Castle

Casco Castle, built in 1903 by the owner of the Portland & Brunswick Street Railways, Amos Gerald, was a unique summer resort in South Freeport. People traveled by trolley and steamer to enjoy the hotel with its beautiful gardens, food, and comfortable accommodations. The resort also had its own ball field and zoo.

L.L.Bean: The Story of the Maine Hunting Shoe

Famous for the development of his Maine Hunting Shoe, L.L. Bean took his simple idea and became internationally known as the “Merchant of the Maine Woods.” Told in his own words, L.L. explains how his “idea” came to be, and who his earliest employees were.

Capt. Josiah A. Mitchell

What began as a trip around Cape Horn to San Francisco in 1866 became a true tale of forty-three days’ survival in long boats, traveling more than 4,000 miles. Mark Twain, then a young correspondent for the Sacramento Daily News, recounts Capt. Mitchell’s bravery.
