Volunteer

Volunteers are vital to our mission to preserve and share the history of Freeport.

Learn something new, keep current skills sharp, enjoy the camaraderie of other volunteers and join us as we keep Freeport’s fascinating history alive.

With two National Trust properties, extensive collections and an active schedule of public events and exhibits, Freeport Historical Society offers a range of interesting and varied volunteer opportunities.

Volunteer opportunities

Freeport Historical Society holds numerous events throughout the year, including:

  • The FHS Plant Sale
  • The Summer Solstice Gala
  • The Freeport in Flower Garden Tour
  • Pettengill Farm Day

If you would like to be part of one or more of these events, be sure to click "Event Support" on the form below.

Smaller committees help oversee various aspects of our mission here at FHS. If you are interested in joining, for example, the Education Committee or Buildings and Grounds, click "FHS Committees" on the form below.

Do you love engaging with people about Freeport History? The FHS exhibits are visited by many people each year. As a docent, your job would be to greet visitors and walk them through our exhibits, sharing your passion for the town's history. If this seems like something you would be interested in, click "Historic Property Docent" in the form below.

Do you like to work with your hands? Do you have experience doing trail maintenance or basic repairs? Do you love gardening and want to help the Harrington House gardens come alive each year?

Click "Historic Property Care" in the form below to be part of the team that cares for FHS’s historic buildings and grounds.

Learning:

Our Collections & Education Manager, Audrey Wolfe, will “show you the ropes” and teach you how to handle and deal with historic collection items.

Research:
We have opportunities to advance our understanding of Freeport’s history through research in our collection and other online archives.

Digitizing and Transcribing:

FHS has many documents and photos which need to be scanned and uploaded in a digital format. Others need to be transcribed into a digital document.
