Step into the world of Mildred Pettengill — a woman who has intrigued Freeport for generations. Known for her determined life on her subsistence saltwater farm, much is recorded about how she lived, but her heart and mind remain largely unknown.

Local playwright Elizabeth Guffey imagines the spirited, stubborn, and tender sides of Miss Pettengill through the lens of her family ties, lifelong friendships, and the choices she faced in a changing world. The evening concludes with a conversation on Mildred’s place in Freeport’s history with the playwright and Freeport Historical Society.

Elizabeth Guffey has been involved in theater for over 40 years as a playwright, singer, musician, actor, director, and administrator. With Freeport Players, she oversaw script development and contributed sketches to their popular WFCP HomeTime Radio Hour (2004-2019) and worked with Freeport Historical Society to produce and write monologues for Ghosts of Freeport Past. Her short comedies have been produced by Freeport Players, Acorn Productions (Maine Playwrights Festival, Portland), and Opera House Arts (Stonington), and in Sun City Festival (Arizona). Her focus as a playwright is on building stories around characters who lead ordinary lives but find themselves in unusual circumstances. Her characters are often quirky, but always human.
