Donate to Collections

How to donate to collections

We obtain most of our collection of artifacts and documents through the generosity of members and the general public, and if you own items that you think might be appropriate for our collections, we would love to hear from you. Here is some important information to help you take the next steps to donate to our collections!

We consider every donation offer carefully to ensure that any new collection item meets our collection policy and that we can care for the item in perpetuity. Before contacting us, you may wish to review the following guidelines:

  • All items must support our mission of collecting artifacts and archival material related to the history and culture of Freeport, Maine, and not duplicate other items already in the collection.
  • Materials should be associated with individuals, buildings, businesses and other organizations with Freeport connections.
  • Please be prepared to tell us as much as you can about the history of the item, and if possible, provide documentation related to its history and use. Context for the item you want to donate—where it came from, who it belonged to, etc.—is an important part of our decision to accept an item.
  • With extremely rare exceptions, gifts will be unconditional and without restriction and you will be required to transfer full title to the Freeport Historical Society.
  • If we are unable to accept your donation, we may be able to help connect you with other institutions that are a good fit for your item(s).

For questions, more information, or to let us know about items you think may be a good fit for our collection, please contact our Collection Department to discuss your potential donation. We cannot consider potential acquisitions immediately over the phone or accept unsolicited objects.

Appraisals

The IRS considers it to be a conflict of interest for collecting institutions to supply monetary appraisals or authentication for items donated to their collections, so it is the donor’s responsibility to obtain such an appraisal if interested.
